A pasos del Hotel Santa cruz, se puede visitar algunos lugares de interés que le permitirán conocer y comprender mejor este extremo sur de la Patagonia.

Museo de los Pioneros: El hombre blanco se estableció en esta tierra hace apenas cien años, y la saga de los primeros pioneros que vinieron aquí queda reflejado en los muebles, objetos, utensilios, ropas, fotos y artículos periodísticos exhibidos en una de las casas más antiguas de Río Gallegos. Hay visitas guiadas en inglés y castellano diariamente.

La Catedral: Construida hace unos cien años por sacerdotes Salesianos con mano de obra aborigen, en el estilo arquitectónico de la época: Un armazón de madera, recubierto por chapas de hierro corrugado, un sencillo pero encantador testimonio de su época. Ha sido declarado monumento nacional. Hay misa diariamente.

Parque de la Ría: A la mayoría de los turistas les agrada pasear en auto o a pie por este lugar, con sus playones deportivos, sus monumentos, hermosa zona residencial, la vista del imponente estuario del Río Gallegos, con sus mareas altísimas, ver sus bardas en la orilla norte, y Punta Loyola, puerto ya sobre el Atlántico.

En un radio de pocas cuadras desde el Hotel Santa Cruz, Ud. puede visitar la plaza San Martín con su estatua ecuestre de nuestro prócer, sus viejos árboles, inclinados hacia el norte por los fuertes vientos del sur. Rodeando la plaza está la Municipalidad, los Tribunales Federales, los primeros bancos, la Casa de Gobierno, la legislatura y otros edificios públicos. Hay también varios negocios para encontrar artesanías, recuerdos, regalos y ropa de gaucho.

Desde Río Gallegos es fácil realizar viajes en el día para pescar truchas o salmón, o para visitar la reserva faunística de Cabo Vírgenes, donde unos 160.000 pingüinos magallánicos vienen todos los años de Octubre a marzo para anidar, procrear y cuidar de sus crías - ¡ un espectáculo fascinante ! -. También se puede visitar alguna de las Estancias Turísticas de la zona, o conocer la Laguna Azul, una gran laguna formada en un cráter de volcán extinguido. Punta Loyola, puerto de salida para el carbón y el petróleo santacruceño, también puede visitarse.

Unos consejos: Recuerde que estamos en el extremo sur. El medio ambiente es excepcionalmente puro y libre de contaminación. Es una tierra de vastas estepas habitadas por animalitos silvestres como guanacos, zorros, choiques, caiquenes y liebres, Y, por su puesto ovejas. El clima es generalmente fresco ó frío, muy cambiante y ventoso. Traiga algunas pendas de abrigo y sobre todo un buena campera a prueba de viento.

Within walking distance of  HOTEL SANTA CRUZ, you can visit some interesting places thet will help you get to know and understand this part of Patagonia better:

Pioneer's Museum. White man has occupied Santa Cruz for only just over one hundred years, and the saga of the first pionners who settled here is shown through, furniture, objects, clothing, photos and newspaper articles, set in one of the oldest houses in Rio Gallegos, English and Spanish guided tours, open daily.

The Cathedral. Also just over a hundred years old, declared a National Monument It was built by Salesian Catholic pioneer priests, with the help of natives, in the style of architecture prevalent at that time:  A wooden framework covered with corrugated iron sheets, a simple yet charming testimony of its time. Mass is still held regulary there.

The Riverside park. Most tourists like to walk or drive along this area and see the play-areas, the pleasant new residential area, the estuary of the Rio Gallegos, with its high tides, and open view up to Punta Loyola port, on the Atlantic, and the cliffs on the north bank..

A few blocks from the Santa Cruz Hotel you can visit San Martin Square, with its fine equestrian statue of our national hero, and its old trees, learning north because of the great winds. The City Hall, The Federal Law Courts, the Salesian School, the local newspaper building, the bishopry and the two main banks, the Government House, the Legislature and other public buildings are nearby. There are shops to get traditional souveniers or gifts and " gaucho ware".

From Rio Gallegso it is possible to organize day-trips to nearby trout-fishing spots, or visit the Penguin Reserve in Cabo Vírgenes - where about 160.000 Magellan penguins come to nest, mate and raise their young from October to March. A fascinating sight !!
Day-trip can also be made to visit a few of the Patagonian Tourist sheeps farms or to a remarkable lake in the crater of an extinguished volcano called Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon).
Punta Loyola, an outlet sea port for coal and oil produced in Santa Cruz province, can also be visited.

A word of advice. We are in the far south. The weather is cool to cold usually, so bring warm clothes and wind-proof jacket.The enviroment is especially pure and free pollution, the wide open range is mostly inhabited by wild guanacos, rheas, skunks, foxes, hares and wild geese. And, of course, sheep.
